Roses are red, violets are blue, we’ve a few ideas for Valentine’s … but have you? Fear not, lovebirds, Larks will set those hearts a-flutter…
HAIL Bishop Valentine, whose day this is;
All the air is thy diocese,
And all the chirping choristers
And other birds are thy parishioners;
Thou marriest every year
The lyric lark, and the grave whispering dove,
The sparrow that neglects his life for love,
The household bird with the red stomacher;
Thou makest the blackbird speed as soon,
As doth the goldfinch, or the halcyon;
The husband cock looks out, and straight is sped,
And meets his wife, which brings her feather-bed.
This day more cheerfully than ever shine;
This day, which might inflame thyself, old Valentine.
— verse from ‘Epithalamion Vpon Frederick Count Palatine and the Lady Elizabeth marryed on St. Valentines day’ by John Donne (1572–1631)
Valentine’s Day a.k.a. Saint Valentine’s Day a.k.a. The Feast of Saint Valentine, originated in Western Christianity as a liturgical feast day honouring one or more early saints with the name Valentinus.
February the 14th first became associated with the annual celebration of romantic love in the 14th Century, an era when the concept of courtly love bloomed and blossomed. The first recorded evidence of this was a poem referring to ‘Volantynys day’, written by Geoffrey Chaucer in ‘Parlement of Foules’ (1382).
By the 18th Century, celebrating the day evolved into something more akin to modern day Valentine customs, with lovers expressing their innermost feelings through the giving of flowers and confectionery and the sending of greeting cards or ‘valentines’.
In Europe, the Saint Valentine’s Key is gifted as a romantic charm in Padua, Italy, symbolically inviting to ‘unlock’ the lover’s heart. Above: ‘You Make Me Happy’ and ‘I Love Us’ Wooden Decorations £4.99; Wooden Keyrings £4.99 all by Wotmalike at Larks
